After our previous life’s incarnation, when we have left the physical dimension, our spirit guides greet us as we return to whence we came prior to that immediate lifetime’s experience envelope. This is the “Spiritual Realm,” (for lack of a more easily cognisable term).
At first we possess just the awareness contained within that immediate past life envelope of experience that we have just had in the physical world, and are unable to comprehend exactly what is happening to us and where we are. The veil between us and the higher realms has yet to dissolve altogether.
Slowly, as we acclimate to our new environment, we begin the process of our past life review. Consider then that as time speeds up gradually, the veil does dissolve and as we become more spiritualised, and are able to consolidate our experiential gains from lessons learned, as well as those lessons that we failed to learn from (Karma, ‘mistakes’ or lost opportunities), we become more than when we were just embodied physical consciousness.
After this process has been completed we are reabsorbed and integrated into our larger super-soul consciousness, which is the aggregate experience packet of all of our previous lives lived, possibly over thousands of lifetimes. The more lifetimes lived normally equates with the level of its development, and these are considered ‘old souls’.
At some point we decide to undergo another life experience, to reincarnate into a different, similar, or the same physical reality frame or dimension as our previous life experience, for further soul level development and consciousness evolution.
We are born into this world with our higher vibratory spiritual awareness intact with memories of our higher dimensional selves, from previous lives lived in prior incarnations.
Due to the slower and denser vibratory fields within the physical dimension we soon begin to forget our multidimensional selves as though it were a mere dream, and a veil of forgetfulness is drawn across our consciousness separating our non-physical multi-dimensional soul level awareness from our fledgling third dimensional physical world consciousness.
This is a natural part of becoming acclimated to our new environment so that our consciousness can use this physical dimension as a school house for the graduated physical embodiment of our divine potential. This is the process of ascension that we are all here to undergo. Our true purpose, if you will.
According to psychoanalytic theory as expounded by Sigmund Freud, we are born as ID and develop a personality, largely through mimicry of those around us, which he called our EGO. According to his theory, as we gain experience and are increasingly subjected to social conditioning, we are taught the components of what the world expects of (and from) us, in the form of morality, which is our sense of right and wrong. This, he said, is our conscience also known as SUPER-EGO.
As small people we also get to experience many aspects of what is known to be wrong and amoral about this world, and this too becomes part of our social conditioning and are integral soul lessons. This is known as Trauma.
We learn a lot more from trauma than we do from an unblemished and cosseted existence, as it forces us into ourselves to reconcile these dilemmas and these paradoxes of our existence. It is most often the ‘older souls’ that choose these kinds of experiences to have during this lifetime envelope. Older souls are dotting their ‘i’s’ and crossing their ‘t’s’ of existence, as they zero in on the more complex issues of their souls development, their consciousness evolution. This is why they choose to undertake difficult lives, and they are the most beautiful and the bravest of all souls.*
When trauma occurs, (most often as a result of not receiving the proper levels of nurture required for an unblemished existence), when we are young we become the trauma, we embody it, and our pain becomes a part of us that is to be superseded and overcome, either in this lifetime or as Karma in another that is to follow.
From our innocent perspective that is not matured to the point of being able to intellectually separate and emotionally detach ourselves from the world and the trauma we live through, we take the trauma intensely and personally.
We develop responses and reactions, and formulate beliefs and strategies of survival around that trauma. We contract emotionally within the internal emotional refuge of ourselves as a survival instinct response to the outside threats in our environment.
Repeated trauma forces us to contract further inward and to solidify our energies around the hurt and pain we feel. Energetic blockages are created within our holistic bodies, physical, mental, emotional and energetic, so that we lose our energetic fluency and natural flow of being. Our chakras misfunction due to these blockages and we become fragmented and disjointed, and we emotionally and mentally stutter and spasm at all levels of our being, making us feel clumsy and without grace.
We learn as we get better at dealing with the outside world to hide these conditions from ourselves and from others, in order to have the semblance being healthy, by comparing and measuring ourselves up to others. We formulate language and behaviour to cover up our feelings of helplessness, despair and brokenness. We survive in this way and learn to find peace and happiness within ourselves and the world.
This works for a time but remains only surface level and skin deep until it just stops working altogether. We become consumed by our pain that brings with it even more melancholia, low self esteem, self loathing, and anger at ourselves and the world. We become trapped in a self fulfilling prophesy of repeated cycles of abuse and are haunted by our past, in our daytime waking lives and even in our dreams.
We can't escape this monster trapped inside of us that we created to protect us but has turned against us, no matter how we try,
It devours our lives and our joy over time until we are left with nothing. So we project our unhappiness upon others, to see it all around us and begin to believe that the whole world is against us.
Our lives reflect the misery we see around us, magnifying our original trauma beyond anything we could have possibly imagined when we were younger and formulated the strategies of survival in our time of trauma and damaged innocence.
We actualise betrayal, abandonment, rejection at every turn when all we want is to make things right. We repeat these cycles as an automatic response whenever our anchored hurt is triggered, which eventually becomes as frequent as taking a breath of fresh air.
We come to live in denial just to get by and may turn to addictions to remedy the constant pain of existence.
This extends to all that we hold dear, even the things that we love, and it comes about that we cannot find respite. We become our most unlovable when we need love the most. We may even prefer the idea of physical death over life lived as though in hell... Somethings gotta give!
We are pulled deep within ourselves on a personal quest to release those things that hold us back from the Love, success and happiness that we so sorely need on the physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels. We find solace only in release and this takes the course at times, of recklessness, self surrender and self abandonment to experiences that hold even the slightest illusory possibility of hope. But this deals only with temporary respite. The core emotional, mental and physical causes of our pain remains essentially untouched. We cannot find lasting freedom from our pain.
*(That is not to say that more advanced souls do not come to the physical dimension and necessarily live difficult lives, but these are most often of the Ascended Master variety of being, and they come here to serve a different purpose altogether).

Sounds to me like it generally is -- and healing trauma is the only real game in town (as it were)
