In Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning" (Frankl spent 4 years during WW2 in various concentration camps) he noted that although this was about the most 'unfree' situation anyone could find themselves in, one could still live free in one's mind and spirit - and indeed those who did, generally survived. But those who looked only at the material level - which was hell on earth - often died because they could see no way out (which there wasn't materially) - but there is in terms of spirit and the psychology that goes with a 'strong spirit'.

Sure. One can be spiritually sovereign, but write off the physical world as a lost cause. I'd define this as partial freedom, but certainly not full spectrum freedom.
For full spectrum freedom we would need a radically different world. One without hierarchy, and thus without government.
Beyond this, it can get subjective. If you want to live in a technological world, then you would need abundance. That way people can choose what they want to do, instead of being forced into jobs that are in and of themselves a form of slavery.
Alternatively, some people would probably like to go back to the basics and live in small communities that grow their own food and are self sufficient in all aspects. I'd use "The Shire" from the Lord of the Rings as an example to that end.
But the bottomline is that freedom is the ability to live as one chooses, without there being a third party, or other restrictions that prevent your lifestyle of choice.
I agree .. that's why I asked the question, for clarification. Developing "Spiritual detachment" whilst watching the whole world go to pot is a second-best hit for living free. But in the current degenerative phase of our 'civilisation' perhaps such a shift in consciousness might be the only option. Having said that, I'm a 'back-to-basics' guy having moved from U.K to very rural Portugal, where growing at least some of one's own food is the norm, (including wine and olive oil, and bottling fermented foods).

The zone where we (me & my wife) live is Beiras du Nord with mountain views all around. Check out the Tábua, Oliveira do Hospital, Carregal do Sal, Arganil area. People growing their own food here for generations; strongly rooted in the land. A lot of foreigners have come in recent years mainly Northern Europeans - but now Israelis too. Further south (Alentejo & Algarve) have water shortages.
You don't need a large amount of land to grow food (half a hectare, 5,000 sq metres is enough). Many people make the mistake of buying too much land. Most important is the quality the soil, and your own reliable water supply. Some woodland for a renewable heating source is useful too. Pretty well everyone uses wood-burners for heating in winter. I've found that "worrying about the state of the world" (yes, not good for your health) is ameliorated by working on the land - and having friends who are doing the same. We help each other; community is part of coping healthily with life in a world run by psycho-nutters.
